After Al broke tradition by posting two Doo Wop Discussions in one day, I decided to break tradition by not posting a Doo Wop Discussion at all. Seriously, I'm sorry for the delay, but that's the holiday season for ya!

The Aruba Motel is another one of those small properties that I know very little about. Aside from the colorful-but-otherwise-disappointing rooftop signage, it looks like a nice little motel. The railings appear to be unique and the recessed lightning in the overhangs brings to mind classic Doo Wop motels like the Pink Champagne. Does anyone know more about this wonderful place?

Never stayed there, but I remember them having a great coffee shop on the Surf Ave side. It had a theatrical theme to it. Their "symbol" was the theatrical masks (happy/sad).

Take a look at the room layouts to.. Odd. I don't recall ever seeing another hotel with room layouts such as the Aruba.. Always kept nice too.

I think this place might have also been known as Le Marquee (or something like that) at one point. That would fit in with the theatrical theme that Mickey mentioned.

I don't remember much about this place prior to the past few years, despite probably passing it a few thousand times. I guess it sort of blended in with all of the other great motels on the Surf Ave. strip. Then again, being a corner property, I'm surprised it doesn't stand out more in my memory.

Anyway, it's interesting that the Aruba's website prominently advertises the Ala Kai Motel (and vice versa); I guess they are owned by the same people.

I agree about the signage. The Ala Kai restoration last year was phenomenal. I'd love to see the Aruba add some rooftop neon signage. It would really stand out after all the neon that has been lost on the strip. Now that I think of it, I can't really think of any large rooftop neons that are left on Surf Ave. (unless you count the Surf Motel, way down near the end), which is sad.

There are a lot of possibilities with an Aruba sign, also.

We should write/e-mail the owners and give them as much positive feedback on the Ala Kai/possible encouragement about a new Aruba neon as we can. Who knows, maybe it will lead to something...
