I also noticed the Ship Ahoy motel was being redone last year. What's the story with that place?

The Ship Ahoy looked like it was in need of a rehab for quite some time. It looks like the exterior has been completely redone, which is kind of a shame, because it has lost its classic 'blue and white' look. But, again, I'm sure renovations were downright necessary.

I wish I knew what the deal was.  It was definitely being given the "beige" treatment, leading me to believe it's going to be condos.  I can't understand why anyone would want to stay there (whether its a motel or condos) because the location is terrible- too far from everything and pretty much in the parking lot of a municipal building.  I took some pics last year and it was interesting to see the building in transition, even though it will ultimately lose its classic look.  Not to say the building didn't need rehab, big time.

That's the same I thought. The location of this motel was very poor. According to the Hastings book this was one of the first motels in ww. Built in 1939.

they fixed the Ship Ahoy up to make Condos out of them,  when I spoke to a Worker, He said that they would be keeping the Original Name, and He said the Sign (maybe).  This place was full of 'Squatters' Sleeping and doing all sorts of things before it was being re-done and boarded up.  (it's not in the best of Neighborhood)   But at least it's getting a 'Make-Over'  so maybe that neighborhood will improve over time. (fingers crossed)                             wasn't the Fantasy Motel also one of the newest on the Island also?  I could be wrong

I figured the place could not have been that great based on its location.

Whenever we drove by in recent years, the crowd didn't look to be the greatest.

Maybe "condo"ing that place out isn't such a bad idea, considering its recent history.

I'm very curious to see what direction the Ship Ahoy goes in. It does seem like a curious place to incorporate condos, on the west side of NJ Ave. I'm frankly surprised that the rooftop neon has survived so far. I hope they do keep it, along with the name.

Back to the Golden Rail for a sec, I just came across an older image that shows a roadside neon sign and the motel with a blue and gold color scheme. I guess the name was meant to inspire a train/railroad theme, a connection I never really made. Nowadays, despite the use of some bright colors, the motel itself seems to have a more 'subdued' look. The railings are literraly painted 'gold,' something I assumed had always been the case.

Is it just the photo- or just me- or does the right corner of the building in the 1970's have a bit of a curve to it?  I can't see how it would make sense but the photo isn't all that clear.

Maybe I'm the only one seeing that?

The glass sliding doors on the rooms were removed over the years. Is this still a regular motel or condo motel?

Looks like a condo.  At least the railings were kept, and if those aren't the originals, at least they're not six feet tall.

They do look like the originals. At least this place, if it is a condo motel kept most of its identity.

Sorry Rob, that's just the curvature of the scan of the original photo...  Wink
