First of all, thanks to Al for taking care of last week's Doo Wop Discussion.  It was my turn to submit one but having to prepare for a trip kept me from having the time it takes to post one of these babies.  I'm sure Al will appreciate having the day off, so to speak.

Moving back to Wildwood after spending some time to the north, we come across the Stardust Motel.  The font on the sign makes no secret of the motel being based on the famous Stardust of Las Vegas fame, yet unlike the Sin City landmark that was imploded late last year, the Wildwood version is alive and well.  I don't have much to offer as a catalyst for discussion, so I'll leave that to someone else.

We've stayed at the Riviera next door many times, so the colorful neon of the Stardust is a welcome sight to me, especially seeing it so many times while returning from the Boardwalk late at night. The motel itself is nothing spectacular, architecturally-speaking. Typical U-shaped structure, probably built in the early/mid-60s, if I had to guess (although some motels nearby, like the Riviera and original AA Heart of WW, go back a little earlier).

Rob mentioned the connection to the Vegas icon of the same name, so we can assume that the theme for this motel was born out of the popularity (if not during the height of) the 'Little Vegas' era, when Wildwood was attracting some of the biggest names in entertainment to perform on the island.

Here's a fairly recent view of the motel (that's part of the Riviera to the left)...

And an old postcard image of the LV icon, where you can see the similarity of the font Rob mentioned...

I always wondered if the motel had anything to do with the club of the same name?

A while back, someone (Mike D. perhaps) mentioned the Stardust's old railings, which had a neat design with little star motifs. I haven't been able to dig up an older postcard or image to show what it looked like, but if anyone else has one, I'd love to see it...

All that glass facing Ocean Avenue are the backs of those units, correct?  If so, the Stardust is one of the few Motels to offer rooms with full outside views in two directions.

Al, there's a postcard of the Stardust up on eBay right now:

I can't tell if it shows the railing detail or not.

Its hard to tell but by looking at the postcard it looks like the pool was added later.

I assume this to be the case. The windows are only designed this way on the east side of the motel. The back of the western wing's rooms look like the back of any other motel, basically. Interesting design; I'd be very curious to check out these rooms.

Thanks, Claudia! I hadn't seen that listed yet. It looks like this image does show the old railings, though it's a shame we can't get more of a close up. Does anyone happen to have this postcard in their collection? It looks familiar, but I don't think I own this one.

It's a neat pic. I love the old Pepsi machine by the office!  Cool  Can't exactly make out what the red object next to it is...  Anyone?  Huh

Hulk, I don't know if the pool was built when the motel opened, but I'm almost positive it was there when this postcard pic was taken. It's obscured by the angle, and the cars in front of it. It's not very large, obviously.

Not since that pic was taken, at least. I'd say that was snapped in the late 70s/eary 80s or so...

Could be a newspaper machine...but it looks to me like it's as tall as the Pepsi machine.  I thought it might be a snack machine - you know, the ones with the twistie wire mechanism.  It looks like it's got a red bottom, and a top with a glass front.
I might have to buy the card just to take a magnifying glass to it!
