Pittsburgh Mellon Arena?
May 26th, 2010, 11:56pm

OK...First of all congratulations to all of the Flyer Fans...Your on your way to the Stanly Cup! Smiley In Pittsburgh we will all be sitting at home watching the Flyers beat the Blackhawks. BUT we need a little assistance from the DWPL and all of the Flyer fans too!
The local govenment officials in Pittsburgh are about to tear down our landmark Pittsburgh Mellon/Civic Arena aka The Igloo cry. It was constructed in 57 -61 era and I think it's definitely in the Doo Wop-Mid century design. My business has taken me to every major arena in the US and there is nothing like it. The roof is retractable and it looks like a giant flying saucer.(I also have a soft spot in my heart for the old Forum in Philadephia).
Anyway there is a website...reusetheigloo.com  which is a group trying to preserve the arena. Clearly this is a signature building and any notes of support would be helpful or any thoughts pro or con would be appreciated.

I like it too.  Always reminded me of English lit:

In Xanadu, did Kubla Khan
A stately pleasure dome decree

According to the Mellon Arena Manager..If they lower the scoreboard, the roof still opens. They are talking about opening it for a final concert..maybe the Beachboys. Smiley

(By the way. CORRECTION!!!!..I think the old Arena in Philly was the Spectrum.not the Forum.?? I am I right Flyer fans???)

Never been there, but always wanted to go.  I hope it's saved instead of torn down.  Definitely one of- if not the most unique NHL areans.
