There was a good article on vinyl in the January issue of AARP magazine. It was the best choice for reading material at the doctor's office, and I was pleasantly surprised.

David Bowie's "Let's Dance" album, and anything by the Hooters reminds me of drinking there in the early to mid 80's.

can we have a show of hands as to who remembers the "Penalty Box"?!

I remember the LETS DANCE (a great lp) Bowie album mostly because it introduced a lot of people to the brilliant guitar playing of the late Stevie Ray Vaughan.
I also remember hearing PURPLE RAIN soundtrack being played everywhere and all the time in Wildwood back in the summer of '84!
Don't remember that much about the Hooters music anymore  though I know that they were pretty popular especially with the Pennsylvania crowds and had a big album in 1985.

right, tubes were earlier like 1983, Hooters were big in 85 (and we danced, all you zombies, etc.)

funny, I remember meeting a girl that summer who told me she worked at the rollercoaster at Great Adventure, and dressed like Madonna circa 1985.  If you're out there sweetheart, phone moi! Wink

Although this isn't music, it's related: Elvis died when we were vacationing in Wildwood.

What a coincidence, I was on my last vacation with my parents (when I lived at home) in Myrtle Beach during the same time period.
Also somewhat, related we were driving a uhaul (full of furniture for our MB vacation home) from upstate NY to Myrtle Beach on the day Dale Earnhardt was killed in the Daytona 500. We closed on our house the following Monday. In SC, both deaths were treated like a president died .

I also was in WW when Jerry Garcia died.

Oh..back to the subject, anything by the Beach Boys.. yes, WW isn't CA, but its the beach, the ocean, and close enough for me.

The sounds of the tram cars, the smells of the various food vendor wares, and the noise..oh the noise, it all brings me back to a simpler time, when bills and deadlines were not part of my life.

Haha... Tubes/Hooters discussion... awesome.  Had I checked in time, I would've easily given a She's A Beauty/And We Danced distinction.  My generation seems to have an affinity for 80's music, which isn't so much nostalgia since... well, at most you were 10 at the end of the decade.  I know in the DC/VA/MD area there's an 80's tribute band that are hugely popular called The Legwarmers.  The whole decade had its own distinct eras to it... the pop, the electronica, new wave, hair metal, etc.... there's a WHOLE LOT of kitsch to it that is ridiculously endearing... hmm... seems kind of Wildwood apropos.

Now you got me rocking out to The Tubes...

Oh!  And the vinyl comment earlier... once I get it all cataloged I'll have a definite number, but a mix of acquiring my parents' collection, buying my own at record stores nearby, and the wonders of Craigslist and eBay having so many steals... I've definitely got over 100 records... almost all considered "oldies" with some classic rock in there.

And the occasional current band I love that puts something on vinyl... no way I'm not buying that.

EDIT: After listening to And We Danced... how did they not get sued by Bryan Adams for Summer of 69 (or the other way around...).  Wow... weird how you just randomly hear something like that now...

Alot of songs sounded similar at that period of time. Listen to "I want a New Drug" and "Ghostbusters". Its the same beat.

I heard Twisting USA by Danny and the Juniors the other day on XM50's. It was cool to hear them mention Wildwood.

Never heard their version only the version made famous by Chubby Checker. Always fun to hear songs like Wildwood Days recorded by The Dovells and Bobby Curtola's version too.

The Tubes date back as early as the mid 70's. If you ever saw them in concert, you would never, ever mistake them with the Hooters. Like night and day! The Tubes rocked!!!!!  Cheesy Still do.They usually show up at Penn's Peak once a year.

Ok I have been on the Boardwalk for a lot of years and heres my thoughts:

Each summer there is a group, an individual or a style of music that becomes the theme for the Boardwalk.
When you hear those songs, wherever you are ...BAM ...You go right to WILDWOOD ..the beach and the Boardwalk!

Late  1950s  The real Doo Wop stuff was everywhere. Everybody was listening to the Juke Boxes in the Wildwood Diner. Smiley
Early 1960s Chubby Checker and the Twist,  The Beach Boys, Surf Music,Bobby Vinton...Surfer Culture and the "Endless Summer" Movie was a hit in Wildwood. Cool
Mid    1960s  Motown all over the Boardwalk battling it out with the British Invasion/All good sounds! Wink
Late   1960s  The Drug Culture/Psycedelic stuff/ Head Shops on the Boardwalk Shocked
Early-Mid  1970s Disco...Donna Summer owned the Boardwalk! Disco Dance Clubs everywhere! Roller Disco hits the Boardwalk. Cheesy
Late 70s       The hardstuff is back Angry
The 1980s    Numerous guy groups and girl groups ..all with a great sound Cheesy
 The 1990s    Rap,Techno, Huh
The 2000s    A  total mixed bag because everyone is into their own customized sounds. You hear everything from Sinatra to Nine Inch Nails to Screamo! The universal experience for music is over. undecided
