I had one, but lost it, and cannot find it. Smiley

Seriously though, I remember buying one around '85 or '86. I don't know whatever happened to it.
The novelty of it wore off once you left the shore.

Awwww! The Shell Shop!!  cry cry cry Surprised to hear you mention that, SandArtist, but then I guess it was around into the '80s. I always feel like it's been gone much longer. I agree with Martin, love those shell-gulls. A great memento... The clothesline story gave me goosebumps—it's those details that bring your "formative" Wildwood vacations back strongest, sometimes. I recall a clothesline at the Atlantis Lodge/Internationale, and though the memory is vague—I can't even place where the clothesline was located—it has a very powerful '50s-'60s feel...
This is a cool thread, we should bump it with new stuff periodically Smiley

I STILL mourn the Shell Shop. We vacationed in NWW between the 70s & late 80s. I think that was my most favorite place to shop while we were there. So many cool things were there! Somewhere I also have a refrigerator magnet that I bought there with the little seagulls on the boat pilings as well.

Finding the clothespin really brought it all back to me: hanging on the beach all morning, afternoons at the motel pool, and then hang up the towels and go get cleaned up for dinner out (or in) and then some shmooze time on the deck soaking in the whole beach atmosphere.

I think details like the clothespin trigger the biggest rush of memory when they pop up totally unexpectedly.

I had one of those big plastic horns (mine was red) and was surprised to see them on the beach and boardwalk this summer. Hearing the horn reminded me of how much lung power (or how little) was needed to make it work. I bet it's in my dad's attic.

P.S.: I told a clerk selling those horns that I had one as a kid, but she was not impressed.

One of the mementos that I had but I am kicking myself for throwing out at some point, was one of those posters(circa 1986-87) that businesses paid for to have their placement on.  It was an illustration of the island, with the select(paying) businesses featured.  If I recall, that poster was huge, at least 16 x 20.

Wildwood needs a good poster!

On my recent trip, I bought that poster print from the shop on the top floor of the Boardwalk Mall that is a collage of signs from Wildwood. It is nice, but it is not the same as that old poster.

Why not?!  I always thought those things were a riot!   Grin  (They don't seem to be too far in the past, though.)

I remember those, they were great!

I'm sure I have one packed away somewhere, but haven't been able to find it. Can't imagine that we would have thrown something like that away. If you ever get the chance to stop by the Doo Wop Coffee Shop at the Tangiers, they have an older one hanging up on the wall in a frame. I probably wouldn't have noticed it had we not been seated next to it last year. Really cool to check out.

The poster you picked up from the Boardwalk Mall has an interesting story behind it. On a visit to the Boyer Museum in January, Bob Bright introduced me to the woman who took the photos for the collage. She was visiting fro Ireland, and apparently became quite enamored with the island on past visits. Very nice lady (whose name, naturally, escapes me at the moment).

This is weird (and depressing), now that I think of it;  after all the years of going down there, I have hardly anything!   My wife has collected plenty of shells; we have a few books and DVDs (some bought up here), and a "piece" of the Wildwood boardwalk I bought at the Boyer Museum (it even says "Genuine Wildwood Boardwalk" on it  Cheesy ).  Also have a lot of motel brochures; a few "Sunny Days" magazines; maybe a few motel receipts, a couple of Uncle Bill's table menus, and some various "paper" -- and I think that's about it.  Oh - and a "Pirate" coconut head from the boardwalk. Nothing at all from my childhood.  Sad  Do have a lot of photos & movies though.  Guess I better start collecting!   (But I refuse to spend $14 on a Tram-Car miniature worth $5 -- even though every year I come close to doing it!)   Wink

I have a basement rec room filled with neon signs and a few fragments from motels that are no longer with us.

But, my most cherished Wildwood mementos are the postcards I collected when I was younger. Specifically, the ones my grandparents would send me from Wildwood - with goofy little messages on the back - and the ones I picked up with my mom on the Boardwalk.

I know I've mentioned this before, but my mom and I had this ritual. The last thing we would do on any vacation was hit a handful of Boardwalk shops and pick out as many postcards as we could, that we didn't already have. Sometimes, they'd have deals like "6 for $1," so we would occasionally get a few duplicates.

This tradition always seemed to ease the sadness of leaving Wildwood, especially for the final time each year. I had a small leather carrying case that my grandfather had picked up somewhere in the Pacific during WWII that I kept my cards in. When the collection became too large, we transferred them to a photo album; I then started bringing this case to Wildwood with me, and immediately put my new cards in it when we got to the car for the ride home.

Along the way, I probably pulled them out and looked them over a few dozen times along the Parkway and Rt. 73 on the way back to Philly... and who-knows-how-many-times over the winter, dreaming our return to the 'Wood.

But, it's definitely that personal connection that still makes looking at these cards so special. I keep them separate from the newer-older cards I pick up on eBay these days, just for that reason.

OOHHHHH I had the big poster too!!! However back in my teenage years I stupidly tossed it while cleaning my room.  Geez I wish I still had that now -- that would be great in my Wildwood room - which consists of many pictures, the Commerce Bank Hunt's Pier pic, a Wildwood lifeguard boat, the tram car (yes I spent the money on it) and a Randy Fascination bobble head.

Al -- love your postcard tradition!

I have that poster framed and hanging on my bedroom 'Wildwood' wall.   Cool

I have lots of little odds and ends collected over the years.  My favorite other than the poster is a little cross-stitch of the boardwalk made from a kit bought at Salty Dog Needlecraft.  I probably still have the pattern filed away if any of you crafty types are interested.

Sadly I really don't have any mementos from Wildwood other than photos/videos. I've always thought about making a scrap book of sorts with tokens, tickets, photos, postcards, etc in it but just never got around to starting one.
