in the meantime, here's more factual information than I'm capable of mustering.

Enjoyed that link. Didn't know the late Schumann's Restaurant was also built in 1956.

the fantasy was the first motel made by Morey, correct? It was a very distinctive hotel but in a bad(too much traffic) location though.

The first Morey creation was Jay's Motel four years earlier ('52), according to Kirk Hastings... Do you think the location hurt the Fantasy throughout its existence, or just toward the end, or...?

I've never heard or read anything about exactly why the Fantasy was given up. I know, the backstories of most of these Doo Wop demolitions will be variations on the "everybody has their price" theme, but I'm curious about those variations. [/quote]

I guess I meant that the Fantasy was the first *Doo wop* type motel made by Morey.. Jays was pretty much a cottage type hotel.. I would say the traffic(must be bumper to bumper on the weekends) had to hurt the hotel from the beginning..

I would imagine the Fantasy did great in its early days. The location, though still 'high-profile' probably became less of an asset later, as so many motels would be built much closer to the Boardwalk and beach.

It looked absolutely spectacular in those early postcards, and was still a neat-looking place right up until the end. You could certainly tell that it's better days were behind it, but who knows what might have been with some appropriate TLC.

It's interesting how what might have been considered "upgrades", however well-intentioned, to the appearance of a Motel by its owners, sometimes ended up being downgrades instead.

I wonder how many ownership changes the Fantasy went through over the years.

Our information has Will Morey and his family living above the office until 1958, when they moved to the Satellite. But, I'm not sure how long he retained and continued to run the Fantasy.

You really have to credit his foresight. As others have noted, the Fantasy's location, design, and timely debut made it the "Gateway to Doo Wop Land" in more ways than one. And this was certainly no coincidence.

I'm sure Will Morey could have built the motel on any number of empty lots elsewhere on the island, but he chose that location along the Rio Grande entrance boulevard for obvious reasons. I can only imagine what it must have been like then, having been a regular yearly Wildwood visitor and seeing this place upon arrival in 1956.

Must have produced many WOW moments.

The Fantasy achieved what it set out to do. It had that Las Vegas Strip thing going. It was forward-looking. It had an adult sophistication. I disagree that the location was a mistake. The people who stayed there wanted to be in the middle of the action and they wanted to be seen.

I certainly wouldn't say that the Fantasy's location was a mistake.

But, in later years, I could see where it might have worked to the owners' disadvantage (because it was no longer in the middle of all the action).

Yeah, and the coolness factor was totally gone when they redid the railing, replaced the sign and gave it an inappropriate paint job. Had it survived, it might have had a second life. But there are so many lost ones for which that could be said.

I have a feeling the motel's prime real estate had a lot to do with the site's appeal to developers.

I guess the question is (though it's a moot point anyway), what would have happened to the Fantasy had Harley Davidson not moved in next door?

While the motel occupied a 'high-profile' location, I'm not sure it was (or is) a prime location for new housing construction. That area west of NJ Avenue didn't see as much redevelopment, for obvious reasons.
