The
mission of the Doo Wop Preservation League is to foster awareness and appreciation
for the Wildwoods' rich history and heritage as a mid-20th century American beach
resort, and to encourage the preservation and promotion of the resort's
cultural artifacts from the 1950s and 60s, particularly the large surviving collection
of colorful and quirky "Doo Wop Motels" and other mid-century
commercial architecture that gives the resort it's unique character today.
The
ultimate goal of the league is to encourage continued economic development
and growth of the tourism industry in the Wildwoods through the promotion
of these unique historic assets, and to encourage the adoption of a resort-wide
theme and visual motif that plays off the spirit of the 1950s/60s period,
including the restoration of classic period motels along with complementary new
development.
