Thanks for that new article and it is too important to lose so this is good news. Maybe the lack of upkeep and shoddy repairs last year were due to knowing they were going to sell and just didn't care any more. We will check out the Tiki Top Grill when we are down in September. The food at the Waikiki Coffee Shop was always just average but the view was great to say the least! There is nothing wrong with the Waikiki compared to other 50+ year old motels down there that better cleaning, proper painting instead of spot painting and new deck furniture can't fix.
It is so true how we get attached to certain places and like you I hope the new owners improve the place, the location is unbeatable. Back in the 1970's and 80's they used to have a weekly luau! We have not booked September yet this year mostly because of not being sure where to stay. The Waikiki was automatic before this year but a run down motel can almost ruin the fun,
I think we all have motels we are more comfortable with for one reason or another. I always enjoyed the Waikiki's southern exposure, great views to the south as there is not another motel immediately across from it to block views and up to last year it was always very well kept. Love the rooftop restaurant for breakfast! I hope if the new owners keep the motel and don't flatten it for condos they go all in on the Tiki theme to make it more unique. We usually go in September for at least a week car show and Irish Festival time and it is nice to see a lot of the same people every year.
I really appreciated all the little touches they had in the rooms, like the palm tree wine glasses and other decor. I hope the new owners can give it the love and care it deserves.
I also know what you mean about seeing repeat customers. I've been staying at the same place every year for the car show and there's the same group who come down the same time since my son was a baby.
It's a cute motel but there was something about it that I couldn't really get comfortable. I don't think I'd stay there again. Don't get me wrong, when I booked it I knew we wouldn't be staying at a five star hotel but there are other places in WW that feel like a second home and this wasn't one of them.
I stayed there for the first time a couple weeks ago and was surprised by the lack of upkeep. It wasn't the worst place we've stayed at but there were some things that surprised me and put a sour taste in my mouth. For one, our screen door was off the hinges and just resting against the wall. It makes sense now that they sold the place. I really hope they keep the theme because all in all it's not a bad place but definitely needs a little work put into it.
I also hope it stays a motel and the new owners upgrade it. We have stayed there at least 10 times over the years and during the last stay for a week last September there was a very obvious decline in cleanliness and upkeep. The large oceanfront sundeck was filthy to the point other guests complained. Someone touched up the paint in the bedroom with a roller and it didn't even come close to matching the original color, not a big deal but just cheap looking and tacky. All that said I really hope it stays a motel as the Waikiki and Royal Hawaiian are about the only two Tiki motels left and I really have great memories of the place.
The first place we stayed at and my favorite motel, I hope the new owners don't tear it down or ruin the exterior decor. This is perhaps the best example of Tiki style left on the island.
I hope they keep it a motel and also hope the rooftop restaurant stays. We have enjoyed many breakfasts there and the view is just fantastic......Warren

Let's hope for the best and hope the new owners do right by the place . I guess I won't be staying there again unless I see improvement.
