My son and I were down to Wildwood today to see how they were handling opening during the Covid-19 pandemic. Unfortunately, not many people seemed concerned about social distancing or wearing a mask. We were some of the few people on the boardwalk actually wearing a face mask.
Here is some footage I took. The audio in the recording is a message that they play every 15-minutes on the boardwalk.

Thanks Bill. I was watching some live cams and I just couldn't bear myself to watch for long. I now personally know 12 people (including one of my student's grandmothers, heartbreaking) who have lost someone to it. Nearly lost a good friend to it. Another friend who recovered hasn't gotten his taste back, and he had it back in March.
For those that go...enjoy yourselves, please take it safe. Protect others if not yourself. Yes germs CAN spread in the air outside, there's just less surfaces for them to land on. Don't take it lightly, it has far surpassed the death toll of the regular flu. The asymptomatic aspect is the worst part about it, something you'd never get with a regular flu. My concern with it is if I were to get it, asymptomatic or not, to then transmitting it to my parents, my girlfriend, or her health compromised mother.
With that said, if people continue to do the right thing and things are going in the right direction, I will go for a daytrip at the end of August. But let's see where we're at. I have a feeling MDW is going to cause a spike in numbers over the next two weeks. If you do happen to go, enjoy yourselves.
Sorry for the long post, losing so many people has taken a bit of a toll...
I'm sorry to hear about the people who have lost loved ones. It's also troubling to see no one practicing social distancing. I don't see any way the boardwalk will be 100% up and running this year.
You do know that a dust mask does NOTHING as far as stopping a microscopic virus from permeating thru it don't you? Masks do nothing as far as preventing it. Its hilarious how idiotic some are believing what the Government feeds us. Anyway, people are catching and and enjoying life in Wildwood! Perfect! And I don't know one person who has died from it (legitimately) as the death reports are blaming covid 19 in way more cases then are actually killed by it.
I guess people can believe what they want to believe. The masks are for protecting OTHER people from droplets that fly out of our mouths—that includes when we speak, not just when we cough or sneeze. This prevents the droplets from traveling far through the air.
I'm glad that you don't know anyone who has died from Covid-19. Unfortunately, my cousin and a former co-worker who retired two years ago both died of complications from Covid-19. They were both still young in my opinion. I'll continue to wear my mask and keep away from crowds until scientific experts tell me otherwise.
I don't listen to the government, both parties are useless in many ways. I listen to the medical experts and scientists. You're very lucky you don't know anyone who died from it. Of the 12 I do, only 2 were elderly and 3 had underlying conditions. One was in their 30's with no pre-existing health conditions. My mom, who has been super safe throughout this whole thing and is only in her 50's, isn't doing too good this morning and is about to get tested. So go ahead, keep denying the seriousness of this flyign.
@DarkInThePark Bill, I'm sorry for your losses.
Blues_surge. Prayers for mom. I hope she will be ok.
Sorry for your losses Bill.
Thank you Hulk.
Frank, do you think that just the US is making up the number of Covid-19 deaths, or all the countries on Earth are making up the number of deaths? I'm wondering if you think this is a world-wide conspiracy.
And once again, any mask or fabric over your mouth reduces the travel distance of any water droplets coming out of your mouth. It is not designed to stop microscopic particles from going into your nose. It is so people can be 6-feet apart without getting hit with contaminated exhale from someone unknowingly carrying the virus.
Thanks for the well wishes everyone.
Oh hey look, a Facebook meme. Yes, I'll trust and believe a facebook meme. My mind is TOTALLY convinced...it must be true, I saw it on the internet!!!
all sarcasm aside, I wish people did research. please do some fact checking when you come across things on the internet. this is a major problem and it's why there's so much venom on both sides.
here is the fact check to that very picture. took 15 seconds to find.
you're welcome.

so.. What you post is true (found on the internet) but my post(also found on the internet) is not true. Makes perfect sense
what makes perfect sense is that so many people fall hook line and sinker for information without doing research. sorry I used facts which linked various sources to back up my claim, unlike you. next time, I'll use a public library for my sources if that makes you feel better since it wouldn't be found on the internet. research is key. I learned that from earning two master's degrees. science is also a subject I teach.
..but believe your memes. it's all good.
I too have numerous degrees.. in Engineering .. So I do know what Im talking about and can think for my self. I will not follow what Im told told just because they were voted in. I can think for myself.
You say you think for yourself, which I'm sure you do.
But you posted a picture which essentially is telling people how to think.
Anyway, I think we've dried up the well on this discussion. Be well.
sorry Bill for derailing your thread. I'm going to stop now.
Blues_range, how is your mom doing?
she's ok, thank you for asking. still not feeling great, was told yesterday that she has to wait until sunday morning for a test. they checked to see if it was other things, such as strept throat and it's not. symptoms about the same as yesterday. she's trying to convince herself it's a really bad case of allergies. for her sake, I hope she's right.
Please keep us posted
Please keep us posted
I really considered if I should join this discussion or not and I have decided to post my opinion, worth what you pay for it, and just leave it at that. It is NOT my intent to offend anyone here with whom I hold a dear love of the Wildwoods in common. When I see the policy reactions of our leaders over this event, it scares me to see how easily people can be led into a sort of herd mentality. We live in a time when every facet of life has been invaded by personal and political ideology and that most definitely includes "science". Experts? Most are either infected with their own ideology or know very little of what they profess. The shutting down of the economy is and will have a devastating effect for a decade. People have lost jobs, hopes and dreams and I'm sure some have lost or will lose their homes. The numbers of deaths and the categories of people dying does not justify what has been done. No I am not ignoring the virus , I know it is real and the loss of human life is heartbraking. Things like limiting crown size on a beach are just plain moronic and I am sorry to speak that way. I think that we should have been told about the virus, told how it spreads and then be allowed to all act in our own best interest of our own accord. I do hope that no one takes offense to my opinion. Sometimes hard discussions are just that....hard.......Warren
It's easy to think that way until you or a loved one is on a ventilator in the ICU. I wonder how many people would have died in NYC if they didn't shut down the city? About the same? More? Less? Should we sacrifice our economy so that our parents and grandparents can live through this virus? I guess a lot of people feel that if you're over 60, you lived long enough. My mom turned 80 this year and I'd like to have her around for many years to come.
I appreciate your response and I do take and consider your points. I agree 100 percent on your point about people over 60. And I believe that over the coming years the elderly will become more "inconvenient". .....Warren
It is a very tough discussion. Warren you make great points. One of my co-workers lost his father who was in the nursing home. The worst part is, he wasn't informed of the death until a week later. Our society should value the elderly, as it once did, and as many other cultures and countries still do. Our very own Native Americans put the highest value on elders and we really should all do the same. This virus has exposed how unhealthy this country is too. This is something that sorely needs to be addressed but it doesn't seem like it is. We just hear the politicians or news reporters say "oh if you have an underlying diseases your chances of survival are low" . But where is the encouragement to try to better our health in the long run? There is none (probably because there's no money behind being healthy) . Speaking of money, this also goes to show how dire the economic situation is for many people. I don't fully blame, but partly blame, the lack of financially literacy available for most people (in many cases, not their fault) . Unless you either do your own research, or have friends/family that explain financial literacy, many are lost. I have been teaching my 6th graders about health and financial literacy throughout the school year (off curriculum, but I don't care, they need to know it! ) and I'm grateful for that.
You make two extraordinarily great points Blue. That of health and finances. Kudos to you for teaching those things. Your points are well said......Warren.
thank you. we're really in strange times. I know of a few people who invested just a bit of money back in March and they're already making profits. I know of others who have to collect unemployment due to this. some took their stimulus money and put it towards paying off debt, or investing. others had debt and just continued to buy more with it. but I do not judge either way (and I hope I don't come across as such) . sign of the times.
I just hope we don't all get so polarized that we forget that there are two sides to this. Health and economic. Both are equally as important. We might think being broke is better than being in the ground but tell that to someone who is losing their business, life savings, home and every bit of security they thought they had. My personal thoughts on this are people are going to start coming out over the Summer regardless of what Governor Murphy or anyone else says and some immunity will hopefully be built by the regular old exposure method. This will make it all the more important the immune compromised be careful and those of us with those people in our lives are careful on how we act so we don't bring anything home to them.
The economic devastation caused by this will far surpass any fake death numbers posted by any government agency. The death numbers are just that . Fake numbers to satisfy an agenda. Soon as everyone realizes that, the sooner everything will go back to normal.
Just curious Frank...do you think the 9/11 terrorist attacks and the Sandy Hook Elementary School shooting were government hoaxes? I want to see if we agree on anything other than Mack's is better than Sams.
Hm. So Frank what you're saying is President Trump is lieing about all the people who died already because he has some sort of agenda? I really wonder if you'd think differently about it seeing people suffer or knowing people who died, like I do. You really mean to tell me that they are part of a hoax?
